I get asked a lot about how I got started and what made me want to start my own line of ladies clothes. Well, here is just a little background of how my business, “Sydney Elizabeth", got started.
I was born and raised in a small-town of Prince George, Virginia, where like many other young golfers, my grandpa became my first golf teacher. He had a farm and he used to take my sisters and me out to the field to hit golf balls. He would stand there with us for hours in the summer, hitting until it was too dark to see. So whenever someone asks how I learned to play, I always say that it was in a field out in the middle of nowhere.
I didn’t start playing competitively until I was 13 years old, when I told my dad that I wanted to play on the LPGA Tour. My parents are my biggest inspiration and are the reason any of this is possible. Even then, I always struggled finding cute golf clothes. I never went to the golf course unless I had a bow in my hair with my hat, because that is what the pretty girls on Tour did.
I received a golf scholarship from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and played there for 4 years, and they were some of the best years of my life. I got to travel around, miss class, and play tournaments with my best friends, all who shared the same struggle of finding golf clothes that made them look and feel their best. Tennis skorts were too short, and didn’t offer any pockets. Golf skorts had long hemlines and were not age appropriate, always catering to older women. I developed a new dream, and decided to chase after it.
While women of all ages and interests can wear my clothes, my passion is catering to the girl who spends more time at the country club in the summer then she does at home. She wakes up on Saturday mornings looking forward to playing golf all weekend. She embraces the fact that her feet are never going to be the same color as the rest of her body. She doesn’t mind being the only girl at the golf course and beating the boys, and she looks good while she does it.
So, that is why I do this. I want to inspire girls both young and old to chase after their dreams. It can take you places you’ve never imagined possible.
